In Bayfield hearing the expression, “I’m bored” is almost as bad as hearing a four-letter word. With kilometers of hiking trails to walk on, rivers and streams to fish in and a selection of greens to golf on, the word “bored” should be banished from a person’s vocabulary. Darn! We forgot to mention the cycling, museums and the live theatre.

Bayfield will banish the word “boring” from your vocabulary.

The Bayfield River Valley Trail Association is making it easier for folks to explore the great outdoors by establishing three area hiking trails: Heritage Trail, Woodland Trail and Sawmill Trail.

Both the Sawmill Trail and the Woodland Trail offer access to incredibly diverse natural environments. All three trails are pathways through local history; the Sawmill Trail reopened access to the area where the Grist Mill owner had his farm in the 1870s. Also while on this loop you can follow in the footsteps of our original pioneers and the Native Americans who once used this trail on journeys along Lake Huron.

All three trail loops begin in Clan Gregor Square, the historic heart of the village; information signs for each trail can be found in the park.

In the Bayfield River and at its entrance to Lake Huron, the fish are biting all year round.

A significant sports fishery exists at the mouth of the Bayfield River for migratory spawning species. Rainbow Trout can be prevalent mid-March to the end of May as well as in September and October. Chinook and Coho Salmon are often common finds throughout autumn.

In the summer months, the main sections of the Bayfield River prove to be an excellent area to try for Smallmouth Bass, while during the winter, the river mouth often serves up Northern Pike and Yellow Perch.

Golf enthusiasts will be challenged by the number of courses within driving distance from the village. A charming 9-hole course can be found on the northern outskirts of town plus neighboring communities like Clinton, Goderich, Seaforth, Grand Bend and St. Joseph’s offer courses of interest. In fact you could come for a week’s holiday and play a different course every day. A golfer’s dream vacation!
